Job Summary:

Our Corporate Analytics department is seeking a Data Science Analyst at an Intermediate or Associate level to join their dynamic team.

At the Intermediate level, this individual will support the data science function across the Enterprise with all steps in data analyses: data processing, modeling and analysis. This includes making simple modifications to existing processes and providing support for more complex changes.

At the Associate level, this individual will be responsible for routine data processing, modeling and analyses, and supports other staff with more complex functions. (BI, CAT Ops, Data Science). This may include running existing processes, aggregating and reporting results, and making minor adjustments.



Job Duties / Essential Functions – Intermediate :
Models ethical behavior and executes job responsibilities in accordance with Citizens core values, ethics, and information protection policies.

  • Data programming: Make simple/minor modifications to data processing or provide support for complex modifications.
  • Modeling: Routine running and updating of statistical models, including data preparation; fitting or training models; and reporting results and diagnostics.
  • Analysis: Creation of simple aggregates and reports that support business decisions. Provide support for more complex reports. Data processing may include use of SQL, SSIS, R, python, etc. Models may include time series, linear models, hierarchical models, credibility models, gradient boosted models, etc. Reports may involve significant writing and explanation, figures that will be presented to the public, etc.
  • Use scientific programming to support a variety of simple to intermediate tasks, including data processing; running models; exploratory data analysis; aggregating or visualizing data. Can include use of R, Python, SQL, .NET, java, JavaScript, Mathematica, ++, SOAP, XML, AJAX, etc. Can require use of parallel or cloud computing.
  • Support routine running of data processing, modeling, or analysis processes, as well as simple ad-hoc adjustments. May require updating of programming code in R, python, SQL, etc.; time series or regression modeling; creating maps; updating EXCEL and WORD documents; use of source control; etc.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis as needed to support act of data processing, modeling, analysis, or reporting. May require updating of box plots, histograms, LOESS models, kernel density estimation, maps, etc.
  • Aggregate data or modeling results. Reports may be EXCEL or WORD documents, maps, interactive dashboards, or in other formats as needed. May require use of SQL, COGNOS business intelligence products, R, python, etc.

Job Duties / Essential Functions – Associate :
Models ethical behavior and executes job responsibilities in accordance with Citizens core values, ethics, and information protection policies.

  • Perform routine running of data processing, modeling, or analysis processes, as well as ad-hoc adjustments. (Analyst may make changes to data processing scripts in SQL, R, python; apply modeling techniques such as method-of-moments and variance calculations; run catastrophe model with pre-determined options; generate and format simpler reports; etc.)
  • Ensure data quality, conduct quality assurance functions, and data validation. As needed, audit data from policy system and/or other sources to identify anomalies. Follow up to ensure errors are corrected at the source and issues are resolved.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis for data processing, modeling, analysis or reporting. (Analyst may be required to analyze data distributions using histograms, LOESS models, mapping, etc.)
  • Aggregate data and/or modeling results. Reports may be EXCEL or WORD documents, maps, interaction dashboards, or in other formats as needed. May require application of statistical concepts like weighted average; correctly report PMLs and AALs; correctly format tables and figures; etc.
  • Generate detailed documentation of work to enable reviews and replication of reports.

Required Education / Experience / Knowledge, Skills & Abilities – Intermediate :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a quantitative field such as Actuarial Science, Mathematics or Statistics OR 4 years relevant experience, OR a combination of college education and relevant experience equivalent to 4 years
  • At least 3 years of experience working with data retrieval, cleaning, modeling in an environment such as R, SAS, SPSS, EMBLEM, etc.; or quantitatively analyzing detailed data. Experience should have involved scientific programming language like R, C++, Python, etc. Master%27s (or educational equivalency w/in PhD program) Math, Statistics, Actuarial Science, ACAS, FCAS may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Education concentration in quantitative field such as math, computer science, actuarial science, statistics, physics, etc., with some exposure to programming in classes, or through self-study, and math through vector calculus is preferred
  • Advanced degree or ACAS or FCAS designation is preferred
  • P&C insurance data experience is preferred
  • Intermediate understanding of programming, modeling/machine learning, knowledge of insurance data, analytical skills and knowledge of data programming
  • Scientific programming (R, C++, Python, Fortran, etc.) and solid data programming skills
  • Data visualization and the ability to create tables and figures
  • Ability to effectively work in a team environment

Required Education / Experience / Knowledge, Skills & Abilities – Associate:

  • Bachelor’s Degree OR 4 years relevant experience, OR a combination of college education and relevant experience equivalent to 4 years (preferred education would be concentration in quantitative field such as math, computer science, actuarial science, statistics, physics, etc., with some exposure to programming in classes, or through self-study, and math through vector calculus (typically Calculus 3))
  • 1+ year of experience in related data management/analysis, programming, and/or application development projects and activities. Will consider internships and workgroup or team projects gained during college coursework, self-study, or volunteer work.
  • Some insurance data experience is preferred
  • Basic understanding of programming, modeling and analytical & problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of data quality concepts and commonly used concepts, practices and procedures used in BI, CAT Ops, Data Science
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including EXCEL
  • Ability to program, make basic tables and figures and work as part of collaborative team
