Job Overview

The Department of Critical Care Medicine is seeking a full-time Data Scientist to provide analytic support and data management for a variety of health services research projects with a focus on data from electronic health records. The successful candidate will be responsible for gathering background information; developing an understanding of the research questions as determined by the principal investigator; developing and testing programs to extract data from relational databases and import data into statistical software; creating novel derived variables by linking multiple data sources; performing complex statistical and econometric analyses using a variety of software packages; translating statistical output into tables and figures; and archiving code for later retrieval and use. The incumbent will understand pros and cons of different statistical software, models, and data formats. The candidate must be able to gather background requirements from the Principal Investigator, describe the pros and cons of different analytic approaches, estimate timelines for completion of work, and predict potential challenges to producing accurate time estimates and analytic plans. The incumbent should be able to work independently on multiple projects as well as know when to seek advice from other team members. Required expertise is strong fluency in statistical packages (e.g. SAS, R, Python, Stata), experience with large health datasets, and complex statistical modeling. A basic understanding of SQL and NoSQL is also required. Experience with machine learning (Python or ML services on AWS and Azure), ability to create complex SQL queries, knowledge of healthcare terminology is preferred but not required. Significant relevant experience may be substituted for advanced degree requirements. Experience in a clinical research setting required. ICU or critical care experience a plus.Data Scientist 1
