If so, we’re looking for someone like you to join the Next Generation Care Delivery Group at APL.

Position Description

JHU/APL is seeking a highly skilled and motivated data scientist to help the Next Generation Care Delivery Group revolutionize healthcare delivery through advanced technologies and systems engineering. The data scientist will process health data, develop algorithms and models, and conduct analysis to make sense of health data and generate insights that might for instance, inform population health studies and/or identify trends. Additionally the data scientist will develop new capabilities to enable the next generation healthcare systems to make better real-time decisions, use less resources, have better health outcomes, and enable healthcare delivery anytime, anywhere.

As a Data Scientist, you will:

  • Develop algorithms and methods for collecting, processing and analyzing large volumes of structured and unstructured health data extracted from electronic health records, healthcare databases, and medical devices.
  • Apply statistics and other data science techniques to analyze healthcare data, detect patterns, and generate insights.
  • Develop and validate algorithms, analytics, Machine Learning (ML) models, and data visualization tools
  • Play a lead role in data management, including database staging and preparation for analysis
  • Develop new capabilities, such as healthcare decision tools, to advance healthcare delivery systems
  • Collaborate with other data scientists and the healthcare community to conduct healthcare research and advance the development of healthcare delivery systems.
  • Educate peers on the proper application of data science techniques in the healthcare field.
  • Continue to develop your technical data science and analysis skills applied to the healthcare domain

    You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…

  • Hold an MS in data science, statistics, math, computer science, or a related discipline
  • Have a deep understanding of data science techniques and methods including a wide variety of algorithms and knowledge about which to use in different applications.
  • Have 2+ years of experience in solving problems using data analytics, data visualization, modeling, and data management tools
  • Have experience using data analysis and querying tools, including statistical software packages and programming languages (e.g. Python, R, SQL, SAS, MATLAB, C++, , Java Script, Tableau etc.)
  • Are a strong communicator and can present technical details to a diverse audience,
  • Excel at independently resolving complex problems
  • Demonstrated strong initiative, organization, and planning
  • Are able to travel up to 10%
  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • You’ll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you:

  • Possess a PhD degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science or related technical field
  • Have experience with common open-source and commercial tools and frameworks such as Hadoop, Docker containers, cloud computing, and TensorFlow
  • Have experience with simulation tools such as Arena, FlexSim, or Simio Have demonstrated leadership in applying data science techniques
  • Have experience in applying data science techniques to healthcare systems
  • Have experience in healthcare delivery systems design, engineering, and architectures
  • Have experience with medical data and an understanding of the healthcare environment
  • Have experience in big data analysis and with big data architectures
  • Have experience with Natural Language Processing
