Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides a full range of contemporary services for patients cared by the UCSF Medical Center, as well as its providers and payers.

The UCSF Pharmacy Enterprise encompasses Inpatient Pharmacy Services, Ambulatory Care Services, Specialty Drug Pharmacy, Pharmacy Business Services, Pharmacy Informatics, Medication Safety and Regulatory Compliance, Oncology Infusion Services, 340B Management, Pharmacy Revenue Cycle and Central Pharmacy Production and Repackaging Services.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is fully responsible for the medication use process across the health system. Services provided by pharmacy include, but are not limited to, drug procurement, drug storage and security; safe, accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; drug information services for clinicians and patients; retail specialty drug pharmacy services; ambulatory care pharmacy services; oversight of sate medication practices; antimicrobial stewardship; pharmacy oncology infusion services; pharmacy revenue cycle; central drug production and distribution with state-of-the-art automation; and development and management of drug use policies and procedures within the Medical Center.

The department is integrated with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic campus unit within the School of Pharmacy, which has a primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the PharmD curriculum, research, and public service.

Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides inpatient pharmacy services for Moffitt Long Hospital at Parnassus, Benioff Children’s Hospital in Mission Bay and Mount Zion Hospital. Inpatient pharmacies provide clinical and drug distribution services to the associated clinics and medical offices of each hospital.

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Senior Data Analyst is responsible for supporting the management of the department’s financial performance and opertional productivity and efficiency.

The analyst maintains critical databases and analytical tools to develop reports, dashboards, and drug management utlization tracking tools to identify trends and opportunities for improvement of Pharmacy Operations, Business, Finance and Clinical Services to reduce cost and improve quality, service and productivity.

This position plays a critical role in developing Pharmacy Department business strategy, developing ROIs for pharmacy projects and programs, and participating in the annual captial, operating and VIP budgeting, including evaluating the impact of annual drug price changes on gross drug revenue.

Required Qualifications

  • Five years experience in Decision Support or Financial Management in managed care, hospital, or similar setting, preferably in Pharmacy
  • Epic Systems Certification in analytical or reporting modules (e.g., Clarity); or positioned for training and certification on hire
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, health related, finance, data science, or a directly related field
  • Experience developing and implementing reporting solutions and tools for evaluation of financial performance, purchasing, inventory management, drug utilizaiton and drug reimbruesement (e.g. SQL Analysis Services, Tableau, MS Office Excel)
  • Knowledge of and experience working with Healthcare specific EMR, Decision Support, and Financial accounting software. (e.g. Epic, Tag Bio or similar)
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel required; Experience with MS Application (e.g. Word, Visio, PowerPoint, SQL Server/Access)
  • Advance experience in using automation and data visualization, preferably MS Office Excel, Tableau and SQL, with strong skills in developing self-service analytical solutions
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead projects and teams and collaborate productively on highly-complex projects with key personnel at all professional and technical levels
  • Advanced written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to interpret and convey highly sophisticated technical and financial information in a clear, concise manner, and to make cogent presentations of analyses, reports, and investigation results. Ability to convey technical topics to non-technical audiences
  • Advanced problem-solving skills analytical ability, and in-depth knowledge of documentation and reporting, with the ability to run highly complex queries and studies, to collect and analyze financial and performance data, and to produce relevant, meaningful reports, analyses, and forecasts
  • Advanced data management and mining skills including ability to develop and execute highly complex SQL queries and stored procedures to organize, transform and extract financial and clinical data for production of relevant, meaningful reports, statistics, analyses and forecasts
  • Advanced experience in working with relational databases, large data sets and multiple data sources required – including validating and auditing data
  • Strong leader with previous hands on technical experience, through understanding of data marts, ETL processing, data visualization, and information delivery
  • Professional approach to work including a strong sense of responsibility for assigned duties; demonstrated ability to handle and prioritize multiple assignments and overlapping deadlines
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team

  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.
  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.
  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.
