About the Technical Finance Team at OpenAI: The Technical Finance team at OpenAI is crucial for maintaining our organization’s financial integrity. We focus on managing technical accounting, financial reporting, and the internal controls that preserve the accuracy of our financial information. Our team works across various functions to improve and streamline financial processes that support OpenAI’s goals. We are committed to enhancing these internal controls to ensure our financial operations are efficient, accurate, and compliant with relevant standards.
Join Our Mission: We are looking for an experienced IT Risk Lead to take ownership of evaluating and building a robust financial reporting controls framework for the systems, services, and databases relevant to financial reporting. This critical role will involve understanding and evaluating end-to-end system flows, assessing the sufficiency of IT General Controls (ITGCs) and IT Application Controls (ITACs), and partnering with control owners across teams to establish a strong controls environment. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who thrives in dynamic, high-tech environments and has the expertise to independently manage a comprehensive program.
Reporting directly to the Head of Controls, you will be pivotal in supporting OpenAI's mission and strategic objectives. You will lead efforts to ensure our financial reporting systems are not only stable and robust but also innovative and aligned with our fast-paced growth. This role is not just about maintaining standards—it's about setting new ones that match our global impact.
In this Role, You Will:
Own IT Risk Management:
Lead Risk Assessments: Spearhead comprehensive risk assessments to uncover potential vulnerabilities and devise robust mitigation strategies. This includes critical IT system risks, cybersecurity and other financially impacting compliance requirements.
Design and Implement Control Activities: Lead the development and implementation of a financial reporting IT controls framework. Craft and continuously refine a suite of control activities grounded in COSO principles. This role demands innovative thinking to develop both preventive and detective controls that ensure the integrity and reliability of OpenAI's financial and operational processes, including:
IT General Controls (ITGCs): Implement stringent ITGCs to regulate access and ensure data integrity on both SaaS and in-house systems.
Policies and Procedures: Establish clear, actionable policies and develop procedures that operationalize these frameworks. Ensure these are well-communicated and executed to align with OpenAI’s strategic goals.
Application Controls: Intelligently design and implement system solutions to enforce automated controls to address financial reporting risk.
Monitor and Improve Processes:
Integrated Monitoring Framework: Develop and manage a sophisticated monitoring system that continuously evaluates the effectiveness of internal controls. This framework will provide real-time insights into all control components.
Regulatory Compliance and Standards Adherence: Ensure all monitoring activities are in line with current regulatory demands and best practices.
Lead and Influence:
Cross-Functional Leadership: Work across multiple organizations at OpenAI to establish alignment and collaboration in the controls environment.
External Audit Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors on all IT risk areas, ensuring that all audit requirements are met and any remediation actions are promptly addressed.
Evaluate and Map System Flows: Identify and address risks associated with information used in financial reporting.
Collaborate with Teams: Partner with engineering, finance, and compliance teams to design, implement, and document robust controls.
Educate Stakeholders: Provide expert guidance on IT risk concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
You Might Thrive in This Role If You Have:
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Engineering, Data Science or a related field with at least 10+ years of experience in risk management, internal controls, or a related function, including at least 2 years in an industry role.
Professional Certifications: CIA, or CISA preferred, with a deep understanding of the COSO framework and experience in applying it within a tech-focused environment.
Experience with ITGCs and External Vendor Reviews: Proven ability to implement and monitor IT General Controls and conduct SOC 1/2 reviews or similar for external vendors.
Strong Leadership and Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex projects. Excellent communication skills are essential for interacting with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Strong capability to analyze risk and design effective controls. Ability to identify and implement process improvements that enhance reliability and efficiency.
Technology Proficiency: Experience with modern ERP systems like NetSuite and control tools like Workiva/Auditboard would be advantageous.
Cybersecurity experience, particularly as it relates to financial reporting risk
Demonstrated experience with SOX readiness / controls implementation programs in dynamic environments
