Job Description and Duties:
The California Energy Commission (CEC) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Data Scientist to join the Division of Petroleum Market Oversight (DPMO). Under the general direction of the Chief Economist and Senior Policy Advisor, the Senior Data Scientist will serve as a prime resource for data analysis, collection, management, and visualization, focusing on petroleum markets, regulation of transportation fuels, and decarbonization policy.
In this dynamic role, you will work independently to conduct complex research and data analysis using statistical and business intelligence software. You will be responsible for developing innovative methods for data collection and analysis, identifying new data sources, and cleaning, managing, and analyzing both structured and unstructured data.
Additionally, you will create impactful data visualizations to support DPMO’s mission to advise state leaders on California's transition to renewable energy sources.

Desirable Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of research, survey, statistical and analytical methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of and experience in applying data visualization best practices.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and work well under pressure to meet quick deadlines.
- Ability to perform public policy analysis and research.
- Detail oriented and conscientious of work product.
- Fluency in Stata, R, Excel, and/or Python.
- Working knowledge of commodities markets and data sources, particularly for petroleum products, is desirable but not necessary.
