About the Role

As OpenAI’s Human Rights Lead, you will play a critical role in ensuring that OpenAI’s cutting-edge tools and technologies are developed and deployed in ways that respect and promote fundamental human rights principles. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout OpenAI and engage extensively with external stakeholders to align our practices with human rights standards and contribute to OpenAI’s goal of responsible AI development. 

This role will be based in San Francisco or Washington D.C. We offer relocation assistance to new employees.


Key Responsibilities

Human Rights Policy Development and Internal Education

  • Engage with product and policy colleagues to support development of human rights policies and guidelines, ensuring alignment with human rights standards and best practices.
  • Promote the integration of human rights principles into AI development within the company through education and awareness initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the various research teams to focus on understanding the human rights implications of future models, including those potentially surpassing human intelligence.
  • Collaborate with teams researching projects to bring AI’s practical benefits to humanity to consider products that would promote and enhance human rights across contexts.


Oversight, Risk Assessment, and Mitigation

  • Work closely with product and policy teams to embed human rights considerations into the design and development processes
  • Set up a framework for conducting regular human rights impact assessments on current models and those in development, identifying potential risks and working with technical teams to mitigate them.


Engagement with External Stakeholders

  • Facilitate dialogue with a diverse range of stakeholders, including human rights organizations and experts, policymakers, and affected communities, to understand concerns and expectations regarding our AI technologies.
  • Serve as an effective spokesperson for OpenAI, supporting relationships with policymakers and advocating for AI practices that respect human rights.
  • Collaborate with Communications, Legal, and other teams to create accessible and compelling materials (blogs, GPTs, videos, etc.) that explain our human rights approach to diverse audiences.


Post-Deployment Monitoring and Incident Response

  • Monitor the human rights impacts of our tools post-deployment, maintaining an accessible database of impacts across the AI industry.
  • Report on human rights performance and progress to senior leadership, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement protocols for responding to human rights-related incidents or concerns arising from our platforms and products.
  • Co-lead investigations with relevant internal teams and/or oversight committees to ensure issues are fully resolved.


Qualifications

  • Extensive (8+ years) experience and demonstrated leadership in human rights policy development and implementation
  • Expertise in human rights standards and best practices.
  •  Expertise in what human rights abuses look like; how and why they originate from state, non-state, corporate, and other actors; what policies and practices can mitigate abuses; and the ability to apply AI potential/risk to the landscape of current and potential abuses.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Commitment to OpenAI’s mission of ensuring AGI benefits all of humanity
  • Experience with large language/multi-modal models preferred
